About the IJFT and JTF
New students are not expected to have their Taekwondo uniform (dobok) right away - you can wear comfortable but modest clothing such as a loose t-shirt, sweats, or the like, until you receive your uniform. See our dress code policy.
A white traditional Taekwondo uniform will be required for classes, which J.T.F Taekwondo sells at a very reasonable price. If we don't have your size in stock, it will arrive within 2-4 weeks. The uniform comes with the official J.T.F school tiger logo printed on the back and two school patches which will need to be sewn on (iron on patches do not hold up well in washing machines). A black uniform is acceptable as a secondary uniform, but cannot be worn at testings, events, or offsite locations - black can be worn at regular weekly classes at our school. Keep in mind that the black uniform carries an additional charge (from the manufacturer) and cannot have the school screen print on the back.
Note on sizing: When you come to class, we will determine which you which size you will need to order. We can either order it for you, or you can place the order yourself from the Store>Uniforms, Belts, & Patches page.
The two 1 hour classes per week plus occasional home practice is considered the minimum for a student who wants to progress in Taekwondo. If you are dedicated to advancing more quickly, we offer private one on one sessions as well.
No, you will get into shape as you train. We have a series of exercises that you will learn as you progress through the ranking system which will enable you to perform the self defense techniques.

No, you are not too old to begin martial arts training! At JTF Taekwondo, we have students start as young as 6 years old on up through their teens and well into adult hood. We've had many students starting out in their 50's, 60's, and even older. Grandmaster Dunn has taught numerous students who were well into their 70's and even earned their Black Belts in their 70's! No matter what your age, you should be checked out by your doctor before embarking on a new program of physical fitness. Beyond that, start slowly, listen to your body along the way, and communicate anything of concern.
Yes! You would be amazed to learn that a very large percentage of kids who take Taekwondo have Autism or ADHD or both! As a mom with a son who has both, I have spoken with a lot of other families who had tried many other types of activities, but Taekwondo was the most helpful. Instructors I've spoken with have confirmed the high number of Taekwondo students with ADHD/Autism spectrum as well. Areas of improvement include increased focus, greater body awareness, self-defense skills which lead to much less fear of potentially being bullied (a real problem for kids with social skill challenges), camaraderie/friendship, a sense of real achievement with advancement through the ranks. Many kids with autism can be very "black and white," and the fact that they can easily see their own progress by way of rank/belt advancement or trophies/ribbons really inspires them and gives them something to be proud of. There are many other aspects that are particularly beneficial to students with ADHD/Autism.
